Chiropractors – Helping Alleviate Back Pain, One Treatment at a Time

download (2)Back pain is a problem that affects 15-20% of all Americans every year. From the general rigors of every day work to the excess weight many carry around on their body, back pain gets to us all. However, there is an easy and non-invasive way to that very pain. Chiropractors have worked for over a hundred years, perfecting their art and liberate people from their back pain.

Causes of Back Pain

For most people, back pain is usually moderate to severe. For most, the cause of pain is simply the rigors of a busy life. For others, it is a consequence of obesity. However, depending on the weight of the person and the extent of their current back pain, the pain can naturally vanish or may become worse.

Techniques

Most chiropractors use a range of techniques such as spinal manipulation and mobilization to help the joints in the spinal column enjoy a greater degree of freedom, alleviating back pain. For example, many spinal manipulation techniques help realign the spinal column and bring it back into its original form. However, this requires multiple treatments. Then again, spinal mobilization is a gentler technique many chiropractors use to treat patients.

Reasons for Preference

Possibly the most important reason why over 40 million Americans prefer their chiropractors to regular physicians is the fact that they use non-invasive techniques to alleviate pain. Without using drugs and surgery, the risk of side effects and infection is virtually zero.

Another reason why most people prefer chiropractors to regular physicians is due to the fear of pain. Regular medication may prove to be discomforting or painful, as in the case of surgery. Fortunately, the alternative is not.

Chiropractors use their hands at certain points to help your body not only relax but adjust itself to a better spinal position. By combining adjunctive therapy with spinal mobilization, not only are they able to ‘work out the kinks’ but ensure that the pain does not happen again, at least for a while. You need to remember that most long-lasting effects are obtained through constant periodic treatment.

Chiropractors have spent over a century trying to perfect their art and help people without ever having to make an incision or provide harmful drugs. Using their hands and the body itself, they are able to not only help alleviate back pain but also prevent it – one treatment at a time.

Treatment and Prevention of Muscle Cramps during Exercise

6253806401_9a9cd9a555Muscle cramps that are caused by exercise can be very painful and can cause athletes to drop out of competitions.  Muscle cramps can happen in any types of sports and are usually a result of muscle fatigue, a loss of electrolytes or dehydration.

Cramps are not limited to sports, they can happen even to people who are not involved in any type of sports.  Repetitive cramps can be healed by a chiropractor by aligning the vertebrae correctly in the spine using various techniques.

Causes of Cramps

The American College of Sports Medicine published a review on the causes of muscle cramps during exercise – two possible causes were identified that lead to muscle cramps.

The first was credited to muscle fatigue.  Neuromuscular systems are embedded into muscles to allow control of contraction of the muscles. When this system malfunctions, contraction of muscle takes place and then causes the cramps.

Muscles that are regularly used, such as those of an athlete or a person with a very active lifestyle, are at a higher risk of experiencing cramps or spasms.

The second major cause is a result of an excessive fluid loss from the body (sweat), which decreases the body’s electrolytes level.  This depletes the body of sodium.

Body’s Natural Cooling System

The body is designed to cool itself by sweating when body temperature starts to rise beyond normal levels.   The loss of electrolytes due to sweating can cause depletion of body’s electrolytes and if it is not replenished properly, it will cause cramps.

What are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals including sodium, chloride, magnesium and potassium. They are dissolved in the body and directly control the required muscle contractions and nerve conductions.

Consuming bananas to treat muscle cramps has no solid ground and there is no evidence to support such a remedy.

Treating Muscle Cramps

– Fatigued Muscles

Treatment of muscle cramps depends upon the initial cause.  For those people who experience a muscle cramp due to a strenuous workload such as exercise or sports, chiropractors recommend treatments such as a massage, application of cold packs to the affected muscles and passive stretching.

Proper rest must be given to those muscles which have experienced an overload due to stress.

– Cramps due to Loss of Electrolytes

For those people who suffer from cramps as a result of excessive sweating and a deficit of sodium, the same methods of treatment can be used besides replenishing the lost fluid levels.

The Ugly Truth About Diet Plans and Programs

tape-measure-1365767356xWADiet Plans & Programs

Their commercials are so enticing. They hit all your trigger points, your pain points, you suddenly believe that they understand you in a way no one else possibly can. Certainly they will help you to finally lose all the weight you’ve been carrying around for so long.

This is it.

Or not.
I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but you’ve fallen prey to some very excellent marketing ploys. In fact, if you’re in marketing, you could learn a thing or two listening to weight loss commercials. The spend a lot of money interviewing experts on the art of persuasion.

Don’t believe me? Read Kim Brittingham’s Read My Hips. In her revealing memoir on being fat, Kim tells of her true-life experience as a weight loss counselor for one of the top weight loss companies in the world. Her job wasn’t to help her clients lose weight. It was to make the company more money. If the client’s didn’t make adequate progress, they didn’t fire them, the told them it wasn’t their fault. All they had to do was sign up for a longer stint with the program. Perhaps those poor people just needed someone to talk to, and if they had sought counseling perhaps they would not only weigh less, but would have a healthier bank account.

Those companies are not designed to help you lose weight. They use your desire to lose weight to pad their pockets.

To make matters worse, those weight loss plans don’t do a thing to help you lose weight and keep it off. There is nothing sustainable about their products.

An additional problem with most weight loss approaches is that the methods typically slow your metabolism. By restricting calories, we put our bodies into a state of hibernation or the belief that we are experiencing a famine. The human body is absolutely amazing, it will reduce the number of calories it consumes on a daily basis during times of want. Exactly the opposite you want to have happen when you’re looking to lose weight!

How about the crazy eating plans that have you eat all the carbs you want, but no fat or protein? Or all the fat and protein you want but no carbs? None of these are a good way to lose weight and keep it off. In addition, your body begins to suffer from lack of certain nutrients and you cause more problems than you’re fixing.

The next time you see a headline on a women’s magazine that promises you will lose ten pounds in ten days . . . Run! Far in the opposite direction. Sure, they have a few people who have before and after pictures that seem to give credence to their claims. But no one is vetting those people and their photos. They could have done it any number of ways.

Take a look at the celebrities who used to be spokespeople for various diet plans. After a couple of years, they gained weight again, and they are no longer featured by that company. If a celebrity can’t sustain their weight loss, why do you think you can? Oh, but that’s what they want! You as a repeat customer.

The worst news of all is that most foods on pre-packaged diet plans is that they are merely chemicals masquerading as food. They are all heavily processed to the point that you need an advanced chemistry degree to decode the ingredients on the side of every package.

You will have much more success if you return to making your own nutritious meals out of ingredients that you purchase yourself at the market. Feature as many whole foods at all of your meals as possible and you’ll be much healthier for it.

No, those protein bars won’t cut it. Please, look at the ingredients. They are “fortified” with this and that vitamin which means somewhere in the processing stages, those vitamins were stripped away.

Lumbar Back Pain and Chiropractic Treatment

images (23)Many individuals experience lower back pain, also referred to as lumbar back pain, below the rib cage in their body, which causes extreme pain and discomfort. It is usually contracted by individuals because of different work related activities which involve the lifting of heavy objects or long and strenuous hours for operating various machines at the workplace. Chiropractic treatment is reputed to be highly beneficial for relieving the pain of the individuals suffering from lower back pain.

What Is Lumbar Back Pain?

The lumbar or lower back area, provides support to the physical structure of a human being. It also facilitates the movement of an individual and protects different body tissues. Lumbar back pain is the pain experienced by an individual in the lower area of the spine, which may be caused due to a slipped or ruptured disc, problems in the ligaments, spinal cord or nerves.

The pain usually starts below the rib cage and eventually affects the movement of an individual. The pain may be caused because of involvement in any strenuous activity, trauma or accident. The symptoms of lumbar back pain include weakness in the leg and loss of bowel and bladder control. In some cases, the patient might also suffer from a fever along with heightened episodes of pain, while coughing or sneezing. These symptoms are glaring indications of a severe lumbar back pain experienced by an individual.

If an individual experiences lumbar pain, because of a ruptured disc, then it might exert pressure on the nerves. If the sciatic nerve is pressurized, then the individual might face excruciating pain and even problems in mobility.

It is very important to adopt certain changes in the work styles and everyday activities, in order to prevent a constant back pain from developing. Different postures at the work place prompt lower back pain in individuals which can grow to dangerously severe proportions if not treated in time. Patients of lumbar back pain require a few weeks of rest for the pain to subside successfully, whereas in extreme cases surgical treatment may also be required.

Chiropractic Care and Lumbar Back Pain

Chiropractors provide non surgical treatment procedures for different musculoskeletal disorders like carpal tunnel, sciatica, neck and back pain. They offer joint manipulation and muscle adjustment services for the quick recovery and relief of patients. The treatment is focused on therapy sessions which aim to relieve the extreme pain suffered by the patients and provide them a healthy solution to their muscle strains and back pain problems.

Diet for your Disc Injury – Know what Works

images (22)An Apple a Day Keeps the Spinal Surgeon Away

One of the cardinal rules that all chiropractors go by is to rely on the human body’s own abilities to heal its own self. In fact, this is exactly why most chiropractors say that patients who suffer from potentially debilitating conditions such as herniated discs can prevent the condition by eating the right kind of foods. Almost 80% of the population suffers from back pain and would rather resort to minimally invasive back treatments to make their pain a passing memory.

Sadly, most people do not see the connection between what they eat and the affect it might have on their backs. Remember, your body needs to ingest the appropriate amount of nutrition in order for the muscles in your back to move as they should. Here is what you can include in your diet to ensure just that –

Power Foods

Your muscles need power foods in order to, well, become powerful enough to support your movements. These are natural food items that provide a great boost of energy in small doses over the course of a few hours. In other words, they can supply an ample amount of energy to keep you going without craving for a sugary donut that will deplete you of any reserves you might have in minutes.

Foods that contain a high amount of antioxidants such as blueberries and salmon that contains omega 3 fatty acids are good examples of power foods. Chiropractors say that foods such as these can keep your body supplied with the fuel it needs to maintain or support your spine thereby preventing you from acquiring a disc injury.

Foods that contain vitamins and minerals can also prevent your back from failing you when you need it the most. Power foods such as these actually aid the body in releasing energy from the food it ingests to keep itself healthy. Calcium and Vitamins such as vitamin D keep your bones strong and durable as well.

Eating right can seem like a difficult prospect in the fast paced societies of today. However, your body shouldn’t suffer for it. Spinal injuries such as a disc injury are nothing to scoff at. Therefore it’s best that you include food items such as whole grains, whole wheat bread and vegetables in your diet.  Not only will this help keep your back in shape for the long run it will also help you run on a full tank of gas till lunch time.
